My Skin Flipped From Dry to Oily After Pregnancy – The Topical Routine That Actually Reset It

Dry to Oily Skin After Pregnancy: Topical Acne Routine That Works

Before pregnancy my skin was always on the dry side. I rarely got pimples and never really worried about acne. Then pregnancy happened and everything changed. My skin turned oily, more so in summers, and the worst part is that it stayed oily even after delivery. Now I deal with pimples coming up again and again on my face, and I wanted to fix it without taking any tablets or oral medicine.

So I built a routine using only topical products. Here is exactly what worked and what people who went through the same thing usually say.

What Women Actually Say About This Skin Change

When I started reading other people’s experiences, the same points came up everywhere:

  • The oiliness mostly hits the T-zone (forehead, nose, chin) and gets worse in hot, humid weather.
  • A lot of women said they made it worse by over-washing with harsh face washes. Stripping the skin only makes it produce more oil.
  • The most common regret was using too many strong products at once — acid, retinoid and benzoyl peroxide together — which damaged the skin and caused even more pimples.
  • The ones who actually saw results said they kept the routine simple and gave it time, around 8 to 12 weeks, before expecting a clear difference.

The biggest lesson from all of this is simple. Oily skin still needs moisture, and being too harsh with the skin backfires.

The Morning Routine

1. Cleanser — A gentle gel cleanser with salicylic acid (1–2%), or a simple low-pH gel wash. This cleans oil without stripping the skin.

2. Serum — Niacinamide 5–10%. This is the main product for oily skin care. It controls oil, calms redness and slowly reduces the look of pores.

3. Moisturizer — An oil-free, lightweight gel-cream. Please do not skip this step even if your skin is oily.

4. Sunscreen — A matte or gel SPF 50, oil-free type. This is non-negotiable, especially when you are using actives and especially in our summers.

The Night Routine

1. Cleanser — Same gentle wash as the morning.

2. TreatmentAdapalene 0.1% (an over-the-counter retinoid). This is very good for hormonal and small bump type acne. Start with 2–3 nights a week and slowly increase. Do not use it every night in the beginning.

3. Niacinamide — Use this on the nights you are not using adapalene.

4. Moisturizer — Same as morning.

Important: Do not stack adapalene and acids on the same night. Alternate them. This is exactly the mistake most women said they regretted.

Spot Treatment, Only When Needed

  • Benzoyl peroxide 2.5% dabbed only on the active pimple, OR.
  • A hydrocolloid pimple patch worn overnight.

Do not put benzoyl peroxide on top of adapalene on the same spot.

Ingredients That Actually Help Oily, Acne-Prone Skin

  • Salicylic acid (BHA) — Goes inside the pores and clears oil.
  • Niacinamide — Controls oil and calms inflammation.
  • Adapalene — Unclogs pores and stops new pimples from forming.
  • Benzoyl peroxide — Kills acne bacteria, best used only as a spot treatment.
  • Zinc — Reduces inflammation and helps with oil control.

What to avoid: heavy creams, coconut oil on the face, alcohol-heavy “oil-control” toners, and using too many acids together.

A Small But Important Note

If you are still breastfeeding, please be careful with adapalene and other retinoids. They are advised against during pregnancy, and there is limited data on breastfeeding, so it is better to confirm with your doctor before starting that one product. The rest of the routine is generally safe.

If your acne is the painful, cystic type, do visit a skin specialist even if you do not want oral medicine. At Desi49 clinic, this kind of post-pregnancy hormonal acne is treated very commonly, so you are not alone in this and it is completely manageable.
